In-Form Alacaraz Can Add Wimbledon Crown To His Hot Streak

After what was one of the best French Open finals in recent times, followed up by another victory at Queen’s, I definitely think that Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz can follow up this with another title at Wimbledon.

Not only is he bidding to win his second major of the season, but also his third consecutive Wimbledon title. It may also mean that he finishes the summer as the World Number 1 – a title currently held by Italian Jannick Sinner who he sensationally beat in Paris in an epic showdown.

For me, this could be even better than Roland Garros – obviously, Wimbledon is a different beast and played on grass – arguably the conditions will be different; we should probably expect a heatwave, though, this is something I think Alcaraz can easily cope with. He showed extraordinary mettle and mental toughness to come back against Sinner and, I don’t think there is any doubt that he can take another title in SW19.

Is Alcaraz On Top Of His Game Right Now?

This is what’s scary. At only 22 years old, there is no doubt that he is playing the best tennis of his career, though he will only get better. He has shades of Rafael Nadal about him – the hunger, desire and bouncebackability and at the same time, some of the grace of Roger Federer.

Certainly, he is the heir to Nadal as far as Spanish representation is concerned and I think over the next few years we will see him start to pull away from the likes’ of Sinner.

His explosive ability is reminiscent of Nadal, while his athleticism to get around the court reminds me of Novak Djokovic. The weapon that is his forehand, which he has used exceptionally to win points with his first serve will only get better, though which is still 125mph!

However, he is vulnerable – the question is whether there is anyone out there right now who can expose his weaknesses. The big one for me, is, despite his age, Djokovic (when completely fit), is still ‘pound-for-pound’ the best in the world and has the experience to set traps for him. Most notably, Alcaraz can be put under pressure on his backhand, while his second serve can be attacked, especially by experienced and aggressive players.

Who Can Threaten Alcaraz At Wimbledon?

As I mentioned, Djokovic, when completely fit, is a formidable opponent and knows Wimbledon very well. He loves the venue seven titles, though with his last one coming back in 2021, he will need to be at the very top of his game.

There will be a lot of home support for World Number four and English contender, Jack Draper who is continuing to improve, though I think there is a significant gulf in class between him and the likes’ of Sinner and Alcaraz. It really will take something special to break into that top two. Whatever happens, this will be a great Wimbledon. Watch this space!
