Can McIlroy finally deliver at the US Masters?

He’s won everything in golf, but alas one major still eludes him. For a long time considered Great Britain’s next big thing in golf, he’s not done it consistently though it seems, maybe at long last, this might be his year.

Still only 36, he’s got a lot left in the tank, you’d say and I reckon, we could see somewhat of a rejuvenation from the Northern Irishman. Indeed, following his most recent exploits, having just won the Players Championship Playoff, it seems that he is confident going into the US Masters next month.

In fact, with that win, he’s become only the second player after Tiger Woods to earn over $100 million in winnings on the PGA Tour.

I thought after his victory, he looked a lot more confident and, for me, that says a lot going into arguably one of the most prestigious tournaments in golf.

There is just something about the Augusta National and I definitely get why every player wants to win it. The course itself has a magic to it like no other and when the conditions are right, the sun is out and the azaleas are in full bloom, I don’t think that there is any othe course in the world that is like it.

And for McIlroy to go through his career without winning the Green Jacket, I think for him would be a huge disappointment. It isn’t like he hasn’t played well at the event over the years either.

On many occasions, he’s been going well the first few days, but buckled under the pressure when it mattered. At 35 and the experience that he’s got behind him now as well as the form that the world number two is in, I wouldn’t back against him and definitely think he’s worth an ‘on-the-nose’ punt, especially with odds of around 13/2 depending on the sportsbook.

Runner-up three years ago, he’s also had four top five finishes in the last 10 years – two of which he didn’t play in. Winning this year would put him into an elite group of just four other golfers; Jack Niclaus, Gary Player, Gene Sarazen and Tiger Woods to complete what would be a stunning career grand slam of major tournament wins.

Rory Finding Form At The Right Time

His most recent win also demonstrated an improvement of what has been his achilles heel over the years – one that hampers many great golfers; his putting game. He will need this to be in top form next month – especially given the speed of some of those greens at Augusta, though for me, if he has every aspect of his game together, I don’t think anyone else will come close. Not even current world number one Scottie Schleffler.

Going into one of the hardest tournaments in golf on one of the most unforgiving courses, you need to be confident and some form behind you and this is definitely the thing that McIlroy has going for him – especially after his victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-AM in February.

If he can put in a decent showing at one of the PGA events in Texas, which he admitted he wasn’t sure which one it would be; either Phoenix or San Antonio, then he will go Georgia in some of the best pre-tournament form he’s been in.
